What Is a QME? What Does a QME Do?
The term “QME” stands for “Qualified Medical Evaluator.”
As physicians certified by California’s Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) to examine injured workers and write medical-legal reports, QMEs play a key role in the workers’ compensation system.
The medical-legal reports created by QMEs following their examination of workers are used to determine if a person is eligible for workers’ compensation benefits.
According to the State of California Department of Industrial Relations, QMEs include medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, doctors of chiropractic, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists, psychologists, and acupuncturists
