In previous posts, we have explored the Independent Bill Review (IBR) from different angles, including how to request one and if you can file an appeal. But are you allowed to withdraw an Independent Bill Review? Keep reading to find out.
What Is an Independent Bill Review (IBR)? How Does It Work?
Ad Independent Bill Review (IBR) is a non-judicial process for resolving medical-legal billing disputes where the medical provider disagrees with the amount paid by a claims administrator after a second review.
Here’s how the IBR process works, step by step:
- If you are a medical provider and want to dispute a payment, you must submit a request to the claims administrator for a second review of the bill.
- If you disagree with the second review, you may request IBR within 30 days of the service of the second review.
- You can submit the IBR request either electronically or in hard copy.
- Remember that there is a fee of $180 for filing an IBR request. If it is determined that additional money is owed to you, the claims administrator is ordered to pay any outstanding amount in addition to the filing fee.
Can I Withdraw a Request for Independent Bill Review?
Yes, you can withdraw a request for Independent Bill Review if you meet certain requirements.
The most important prerequisite is a joint written request for withdrawal made by the provider (you in this case) and the claims administrator.
The joint request for IBR withdrawal must be made before a determination on the amount of payment owed is made.
However, you should keep in mind that when a request for IBR is successfully withdrawn, you are not entitled to receive a reimbursement on the filing fee you paid originally ($180).
